“Now, what were you two doing here in the dark?” Shane demanded as he interrogated us outside of Owen’s residence. He stood in front of us, a towering figure in the shadows, his voice icy with accusation.

The moon had just set, leaving us with only the house’s lights to provide any illumination. Emmett was inside, examining Aengus’ corpse.

“We were staking out the house,” I said. “Earlier today, when Siobhan and I were inside, we realized that voodoo lilies had been taken from one of Owen’s vases. Since Owen couldn’t have killed himself, we knew someone must’ve had access to his house.”

Technically everything I had said was true, so Shane shouldn’t have been able to tell I was lying. We were technically staking out Owen’s house tonight. The problem was that we weren’t actually waiting for someone to enter the house, but rather robbing his garden.

I just wasn’t going to be telling him that part.

Colin nodded, backing me up. “The lights turned on, and we heard a couple of people talking before a loud bang, which must have been Aengus falling down the stairs. By the time we got inside, the other person had managed to escape.”

Shane kept staring at us for another minute, as if he was trying to figure out what we were keeping from him.

Soon after we’d found Aengus’ body earlier, we had realized we needed to call the authorities. I’d remembered what the princess had said about calling her name, and tried it out, shouting “Niamh!” into the dark. Seconds later, Emmett and Shane had teleported into the clearing.

“When we came inside,” I continued, “we saw that Aengus’ body was at the bottom of the stairs, and he had a voodoo lily in his hand.”

I motioned toward where Emmett was now coming up the stairs.

“When Siobhan and I were here earlier, we had gotten permission from Aengus to enter the house, but he had conveniently forgotten to give us permission to enter the clearing itself. Looking back, he probably didn’t think we’d be able to get inside Owen’s house at all. I think he waited until nighttime to come replace the voodoo lilies in the vase so that we wouldn’t know anything was missing.”

“And this other person who was in the house?” Emmett asked from where he was now standing behind Shane. “Do you know who they were?”

I shook my head. “We were outside, so we didn’t see them. But I’m thinking whoever did it may have wanted it to look like an accident.”

“An accident?” Shane asked. “The man is lying dead at the bottom of the stairs.”

“Exactly,” I said. “Without us to overhear what happened, it could have looked like Aengus accidentally fell down the stairs with the voodoo lilies conveniently in his hand. Whoever found him could solve Owen’s murder, and Aengus’ own murder would be covered up. Killing two birds with one stone.”

“You know Aengus killed Owen?” Emmett asked.

“Well, he was certainly at the top of my list. Who else would have access to
